This December, a group of 9 optometry students and 1 optometrists from Pacific University College of Optometry, will be traveling to Cambodia to provide free eye exams and eyeglasses to the villages surrounding Phnom Penh.
The AMIGOS Eye Care program is a non-profit organization of students, doctors and lay people affiliated with Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon. AMIGOS is dedicated to providing quality vision care at no cost to underserved populations in the Portland area as well as throughout the world.
Cambodia has a population of nearly 15 million with 85% of the population living in rural areas in extreme poverty, with little or no education. With a blindness prevalence rate of 1.2%, it’s estimated that over 175,000 people are blind, and many more that are visually impaired. The causes of vision loss include cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma, corneal disease and pterygia. Of these causes, 80-90% are preventable or treatable! Unfortunately, with little to no access to eye care or eye glasses, preventable vision impairment and blindness persists within these communities.
We are passionate to make a difference by providing the best eye care services we can to these populations and help establish a vision clinic in Phnom Penh. We can make a significant impact and improve a child’s quality of life by simply providing a pair of glasses. This will be the fourth annual AMIGOS trip to Cambodia. We intend to build upon our relationships in the country so that we can establish a sustainable vision clinic in Phnom Penh and allow many more people to have continued access to eye care.
Our trip to Cambodia is dependent upon personal means and is very costly. Per person, flights are approximately $1300 with an estimation of $500 in country. The AMIGOS Team Cambodia has been working hard to fundraise for our trip to help cover these expenses.
We are humbly asking for donations to help support our eye care trip to Cambodia. Any amount will help and will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration in helping us provide much needed eye care services to the people of Cambodia.
