ACL surgery/rehab by Mindy Ajemian

Dear Human,

I’m Mindy, a sweet French Mastiff/Staffordshire Terrier born in Manhattan. My Mom (Jen) adopted me two years ago.

In late September, something happened. Two hours after I got home from playing with friends, my left back leg gave out and I started limping. Mom carried me 3 avenues and 3 blocks from Riverside Park to our house. Because I’m 55 lbs of muscle, she had to place me down on the sidewalk after every block (she needs to workout more). Mom said “We’re going to the vet”. I replied "How about the gym?"

After meeting with two different vets and ruling out arthritis and Lyme disease, it was suggested that we see an orthopedist since my knee was very swollen. Luckily, X-rays showed no fractures but sadly it did show signs of trauma. After another month of limping, we drove to the hospital. I got car sick, but felt better when my paws touched ground again. The Director of Orthopedics and his team looked at me. They giggled at my animated expressions, when in reality I thought ‘what the heck is happening?’ While everyone was nice to me, I was so excited to see Mom after the exam. Then Doc broke the news to her... my left ACL is kaput. As I sprawled on the floor, I looked up at Mom. I knew she was hurting inside, so I got up and gave her a kiss.

Since this is a mechanical issue, I need surgery (followed by rehab) ASAP. Mom had a recent setback, and my vet appointments ate up some of her savings too. As for recovery, It’s going to take 10 weeks for me to get better. While I am nervous, I’m more worried about Mom… she already works 7 days a week to support us.

Before bedtime, Mom always says “I love you Boo, never forget that” and gives me a kiss on the head. Sure it sounds like a Hallmark card, but I want to show Mom that I love her too. So, I put this campaign together to do just that. Whatever amount you can donate, would be much appreciated. If you’re not able to, would you please share this campaign?

Much love,
Mindy (woof!)
