All parents have a common goal: to give their children the
best future possible.
When Quentin and Ace were diagnosed with Autism in 2010 and 2011, respectively, we were perplexed at what kind of future they could have. We came to terms with the worst-case scenario"”children who couldn't talk, interact, express emotion, or be independent.
Those fears of crippling disability began to fade when we enrolled them in Cornerstone Autism Center. For the first time, we saw progress"”and hope. We vowed to keep them in Cornerstone until they could transition into public school or until it became cost-prohibitive.
Unfortunately, the latter has come first. After three years, tens of thousands of dollars, and several changes in insurance, we have hit a financial cliff. We have done all that we know to do. We both work (with modest salaries working in social services and teaching at an inner-city Indianapolis Public School) and we are both going to school to hopefully advance our earning potential to provide for their future.
We have decimated our savings.
We have sought funding through grants which provided limited assistance and will continue to do so as we become aware of them.
We're doing the best we know how to do, but this is a challenge beyond our abilities to do on our own.
