Hello, my name is Quacian and this is my life in a nutshell. I was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia at the age of 3. Since then, I had to deal with a plethora of pain attacks and surgeries. Being diagnosed with this chronic illness is unbearable for me at times. However, with my attitude of determination, I always find ways to motivate myself, persevere, and achieve great feats.
My illness limits my ability to indulge in certain activities like going out and spending time with family and friends, playing sports, traveling, and working. Two years ago my doctors told me that my health took a turn for the worse, the experimental treatments would not work for me, and there was nothing more they could do. What would you do and how would you feel if you were told to leave school, go home, and enjoy what's left of your life? Imagine if doctors and nurses didn't believe you could be sick so often so they called you a drug addict because you are hospitalized at least once a month? Despite this, I ignored what the doctors said because I have faith in God and not man! I went back to school and earned my Bachelor's of Arts degree in 3 ½ years. I even spent, and continue to spend, my spare time serving and giving back to communities through the work of my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc.
My hope and fervent desire is to be healed. A Peripheral Stem Cell Transplant offers the only potential cure. This procedure cost approximately $200,000. Even though I have insurance, it is not going to cover all of the expenses. Your donation would make a great impact in relieving a gigantic financial burden from my shoulders. Sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease) is an inherited disorder of the blood caused by an abnormal hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes distorted (sickled) red blood cells. The sickled red blood cells are stiff, sticky, fragile, and prone to rupture. When the number of red blood cells decreases from rupture (hemolysis), anemia is the result. Having sickle cell disease means a lifelong battle against health problems. The irregular sickled cells block blood vessels and cause tissue, organ, and bone damage. It can also raise the risk for infection, abnormal swelling, and strokes. Sickle cell is the most painful disease. The hallmark of sickle cell disease is the sickle cell crisis, which is an episode of pain. The pain crisis can last from hours to days. The pain is typically described as sharp, intense, and throbbing. Severe sickle cell pain has been described as being equivalent to cancer pain and more severe than post-surgical and labor pain. Episodes cannot be predicted, and they vary widely among different individuals.
There is still no cure for sickle cell disease other than experimental transplantation procedures, but treatments for complications of sickle cell have prolonged the lives of many patients who are now living into adulthood.
