Please help make a difference for Steven

As you read this I ask you to think of all the people that made a difference in your life. Those who left us too soon, those that we took for granted, the ones we should have made that little bit more effort to see and the ones we wish we had just spent one more day with.

Steven Osborne is that person for me. Steven is the kind of guy that would never ask for anything, who would never say a bad thing about anyone and would never turn a friend away. One of those people with an infectious joy, a kind heart and a beautiful soul, that is why it is so sad that he has been dealt such a hard life.

From a young age Steven has lived with TYPE 1 DIABETES, but when he reached his twenties his health began to take a serious turn. At first it affected his eye sight gradually leaving him legally blind, then it slowly rotted his teeth away. With only a spare few remaining he was unable to chew solid food for twelve months and during this time lost a drastic amount of weight causing his health to heavily deteriorate.

Poor circulation led to loss of feeling in his feet making it difficult to walk and due to infection he was facing the possibility of losing a leg. Thankfully, through medical support and after being on a long waiting list, false teeth and a healthier lifestyle prevented it. All of this though left him unable to work.

Throughout the good times and the bad his childhood sweetheart has stood by him regardless, but while looking after their two children (a four year old son and one year old daughter) and an unwell husband, she has only been able to work part-time. The scarce income from her work combined with Government welfare has been only enough for essential living costs.

Anyone else would have succumb to anger, fear or sadness, but Steven, rather than feeling sorry for himself only sees the positives. He struggles to walk but thinks at least he can still move, he is almost completely blind but with what little sight he has left at least he can still see his children grow up. Having come to terms with diabetes robbing him of his sight, his teeth and his body, it is now trying to take his life. Last week he broke the news to me that, in addition to everything that he has been through in his life, he has now been diagnosed with BOWEL CANCER.

Already struggling with the financial demands that his medical conditions have cost the family, he now faces life-saving medical
costs. The doctors have one chance to remove it and if unsuccessful he will undertake chemotherapy for the duration of his life. When he broke the news to me mere days after finding out the diagnosis himself, he had already found his potiive spin and told to me "at least it's only me that has it and not my kids". I cannot put into words how inspirational and selfless he is, but after each set back something new always seems to arise to test this brave family.

Their son is about to start primary school and their baby daughter who has yet to speak her first words is at risk of never knowing her father. On top of that even this sweet innocent child isn’t free of the family hardship, just learning to crawl, she is currently undergoing physiotherapy to strengthen her legs to walk properly.

He is too humble to ask for help, but I can see the financial pressure that years of medical treatment have put on this young family. Unable to help him alone, I call out to those who know him, to those who might no longer keep in touch but remember his spark and to those wonderful Samaritans out there who have taken the time to hear this plea, you are all people who can truly make a difference and give this family the life that they deserve.

I appreciate any gift no matter how small, the simple gesture of $10 from one person may not seem like much, but $10 from ten people could really start to make a difference. If you can't spare the financial help, words of inspiration and encouragement alone would be more than enough.

He would never ask for anything of anyone and would be too humble to accept charity, so I do this anonymously to make his life easier and relieve some of the stress in any way possible.
I know that your time is precious, there are countless other pages
that you could have visited and I thank you from the bottom my heart for taking the time to visit ours and share his story.

In the immortal words of his favourite band:

“It’s … One love. One blood. One life. You got to do what you should. One life. But we're not the same. We’ve got to carry each other. Carry each other. One...Life”
