Joan’s Story

I want to tell you about my wonderful, loving, selfless sister, Joan. She lives in Groveland, Florida, is a single mother to two beautiful children, Kaydron and Shannon, and is affectionately known as “G-ma” by her granddaughter Jaylyn. Joan has spent her entire life giving of herself to others. She has provided mentorship to teens and youth, participated in charity fundraisers for at risk teens, and is an active member of her community and church.

Even when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, she continued to give of herself, volunteering and providing emotional support to those newly diagnosed with cancer. By the grace of God, Joan’s cancer went into remission, providing her another opportunity to live a rich life, continuing to raise her family and send her daughter Shannon off to college.

Two weeks ago, Joan’s cancer returned with a vengeance. She felt a sudden uncomfortable tightness in her chest and went to the doctor, where a CT Scan revealed that her lungs were filled with fluid. After testing, a detailed pathology report identified cancer cell type HER2+ 3 in her lungs and her liver– the most aggressive and intense form of cancer cells.

The doctors have suggested that, with the help of chemotherapy, Joan will have at least 6 months to live. But, based on the effects of chemo from Joan’s first bout with cancer, and studies that show successive chemo treatments make it harder for the body to recover, we need additional treatment to help Joan fight and beat cancer for good, this time around.

Here’s how you can help.

Joan needs to be treated with Functional Medicine at the cost of $4300. This treatment is designed to treat cancer and the body holistically, and will destroy cancer cells while restoring healthy tissue cells.

Currently Joan is paying over $1200 a month in uninsured medical bills, on top of trying to put her daughter through college and maintain a home for her family. -- using only 60% of her income while on short-term disability.

Should this last treatment option be unsuccessful, Joan wants to ensure that her daughter Shannon will graduate from college.

We need your help to defray the cost of the treatment and her family’s living expenses while she fights this terrible disease. Anything that you can give will, first and foremost, go towards Joan’s treatment and her medical bills. Any donations beyond that will go towards helping Shannon’s college expenses.

Close family and friends have already committed $1000 towards Joan’s therapy, but we need your help. Joan is a fighter and is determined to see Shannon in her cap and gown in 2018.

We need your prayers, emotional support and financial contributions to help this become a reality.

Will you help Joan fight?
