Randall's Medical Fund

On May 31, 2017 my best friend Randall suffered a stroke on the left side of his brain that impacted his expressive language functions and control over the right side of his body. Unfortunately, no one was with him when this happened and he was not discovered until I went to check on him at his house on June 2. He was rushed to Swedish Hospital at Cherry Hill, one the the nations’s premier stroke and heart treatment facilities. After about a week in ICU his progress was so good that he was transferred to the acute rehab center in the hospital, where he received 3-4 hours of physical, speech, and occupational therapy every day. After two weeks, Randall was beginning to walk on his own again and his ability to communicate was greatly improved, so the doctors set a discharge date of June 25. However, on June 20, a large and extremely dangerous aneurysm was discovered in his brain and emergency surgery was needed to clamp off the aneurysm to keep it from bursting. The surgery itself was risky due to the location, but thanks to the highly skilled neorosurgery team at Swedish,  it was successful. After a couple more weeks in the ICU, Randall was pronounced stable enough to go back to the acute rehab center to continue daily therapy.

Meanwhile, a battery of tests finally revealed the primary culprit behind all of Randall's recent health issues: his mitral heart valve is very damaged and needs to be replaced as soon as he's well enough for open heart surgery. Several areas of infection were found in the valve -- a piece of this infected tissue was thrown off and travelled to his brain, causing his stroke -- and he is undergoing a 6-week course of IV antibiotics to clear all infection before the valve is replaced.

Although he still has no use of his right arm, his right leg is nearly back to full strength and his spoken communication continues to improve. Randall's rehab progress was good enough that he was temporarily discharged from the hospital on July 7 to continue his recovery and wait for the antibiotics to do their job. But the hits just keep coming and on July 9 he was taken back to the hospital due to not feeling well, and an MRI revealed another blood clot in his brain. He has been readmitted to the ICU.

Randall's friends and family have been extremely supportive, but he's going to need additional help to stay on his feet financially. He has already spent more than a month in the hospital, not to mention the numerous tests, procedures, therapy sessions, medications, and specialist consults he has needed and will continue to require for at least the next several months.  Randall's medical bills are going to be enormous, in spite of having decent medical coverage through his work. Anything you are able to offer will help him; even a few dollars makes a big difference when people come together to support a friend in need.

From Randall, his family and loved ones - With all our hearts, we thank you!
