Mary Powers was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in January 2015.She has an aggressive form of the disease. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints, typically in the hands and feet causing flare ups which create massive amounts of pain and stiffness. There are various drugs that are used to treat the symptoms of RA, but they can be extremely toxic to the body with many side effects. The biggest of these side effects is suppression of the immune system leaving vulnerability to other diseases and infections.
Mary was admitted to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital on May 6, with what appeared to be a stomach virus. It was discovered she had Legionella Pneumonia and issues with her GI tract. Conventional medical interventions failed and emergency surgery was required on May 18. Mary has a long recovery ahead and faces three to four more weeks of hospitalization followed by Acute Rehab and Home Health Care visits. Her husband, Jimmy, has been by her side managing the mounting medical conditions and long recovery she is facing.
Mary works for Leonard Paper Company as an outside sales account representative. Her pay is 100% commission. It will be some time before Mary will gain the ability to work again. Jimmy has been a licensed realtor with Keller Williams Metro Center as a Buyer's Agent for Fort Hunt Realty Group. He is also the Team Manager and works as the administrative assistant for the team. The time off from work and mounting medical expenses will be quite devasting for them. They have been married for 27 years and live with their yellow lab, Ally, in Alexandria VA.
