My first experience with GoFundMe came about five years ago when a friend of my son’s lost everything he had in a house fire. I remember thinking how cruel life can be, how your life can be buzzing along one minute and total devastation the next. I am saddened to say this has happened to my family, to my daughter’s husband Patrick. Patrick is a 32 year old Summit County Deputy, he and my daughter have three beautiful kids.
The first hint of trouble was last October, Patrick was having horrible pain in his feet and kidneys, a Google search suggested he had gout but much to his doctor’s surprise, he did not have gout. Patrick’s general practitioner did say he had an elevated white count. Patrick was given a diagnosis of general infection and sent him on his way. As the weeks went on so did the visits to the doctor’s office and around November to the hospital where he was incorrectly diagnosed many times. The diagnosis’s were for everything from generalized infection, diverticulitis, Lyme’s, c- diff, three blood clots in his legs and a suspected infection from a surgery that was more than four years ago, the truth is … no one knew what was wrong with him. The blood clots were not considered a symptom as his dehydration played a role and his mere presence in the hospital explained the c-diff. Patrick would have extreme fevers, vomiting, accelerated pulse, and immediate and inexplicable dehydration. Every trip to the emergency room resulted in an admission some of these stays being many days long. Patrick would discharge and within hours would have to return to the emergency room. The most significant hospital stay was the result of an ambulance ride to Akron General in the dead of night, the emergency staff could not believe their eyes, he was back and he was gravely ill. This admission would prove to be key as the emergency room doctors did not know how to treat him; this admission led to a critical care ambulance ride to Cleveland Clinic where he was listed in critical condition. Cleveland Clinic had Patrick’s New York phone book sized medical charts reviewed and after 12 hospital admissions we had a name, Stills Disease.
Stills disease is a serious, debilitating autoimmune disease. Stills is the adult onset of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Patrick continues to be hospitalized; he was again released this past weekend as a result of another enormous temperature that could not be controlled
Patrick has used all his vacation, sick time, donated sick time and savings; this has financially destroyed this family. Your help will enable them to keep up with rent and food and the growing medical expenses too many to mention. As it stands we are all out of resources on many levels. I can tell you, you will have my mother’s gratitude and my husband’s most sincere thanks. This nightmare started nearly a year ago and this will continue until his treatment can be regulated. I cannot tell you the sadness we all feel watching Patrick struggle to do the most basic things like walking, or just playing with his kids. So, again thank you for reading and please share my post if for no other reason to expand awareness of this debilitating disease.
