Bottom line up front: My friend, Mari, needs to rebuild her son's home.
My wife and I have become friends with a lot of the residents of Baja California's wine country, Valle de Guadalupe, over the last couple of years while spending time there enjoying the wine, food, culture and people. We've become great friends with a specific Christian family that we love spending time with and buying homemade cheese from (Mari scrapes a living by selling the cheese she makes from the few cows she keeps on her tiny property). Mari has two small structures on the property that serve as homes for her and her husband (65 and struggles to get around at all from a lifetime of hard labor) and for her son's family. Her son is married with two sons ages 4 and 2. He has throat cancer and is currently undergoing radiation therapy rendering him unable to work to support his family. City water, sewage, electricity and trash pick up are yet to be available in the neighborhood of Francisco Zarco that her family lives. But none of what I have told you so far is the reason why we need to rebuild the structure that her son and his family live in. They, through all their struggles, are happy and loving people willing to lend a hand to anyone that needs it with whatever they have. It turns out that the hand made from found wood, olive tree branches, tarps and string is on the adjacent property. Years ago, when Mari was able to secure ownership of the property her family lives on, the adjacent fence was not in the correct place. The adjacent property was recently sold and a survey team put down new marks that leaves her son's home entirely on their neighbors property. This home, as it is, is unable to be moved. The good news is that the new survey points did not diminish the size of her property but only move it over, so to speak. So there is room to build a proper home for her sick son and family. My wife and I have already secured a licensed contractor to build a clean and safe home for Mari's son, wife and two small children. The quote to complete a small cinder block home with a concrete foundation complete with roof, floor, windows, doors, a bathroom and small kitchen (water will be provided from a large plastic tank placed on the roof and lighting will still be by candles for now) is $5,000 American dollars. The contractor has a crew available to begin the work the second week of November, 2017. We need half of the money to him the week prior for him to secure the materials in time to begin. I will be there to check on Mari and her family this weekend and will take more pictures of the situation. The picture that I have posted now is of her Son's "house". My wife and I will also be down there (we live in San Diego, CA) weekly to check on the progress and to visit (and buy cheese of course) allowing us to provide updates to you as sponsors. This is a deserving family that has been placed in a situation, due to no fault of their own, that they lack the ability to get out of without our help.
