Meet my niece, Marley Ray Challen, born in Kenya on 14th April 2014 with Spina Bifida. A neurological disorder caused by the incomplete closing of the neural tube during embryonic development. It can lead to paralysis, abnormalities and orthopedic problems. Marley was born with a myelomeningocele on her lower spine, hyper extended knee joints and club feet. She was operated on twice within the first two weeks of life, her first operation involved the reparation of her spine and her second inserted a tube into her head to stop the swelling of fluid on her brain. This tube will need to be changed throughout her life as she grows.
My brother, Tim, and sister-in-law, Kari live in her home country, Kenya. Since Marley’s birth they have since learnt that there are 4 times more cases of Spina Bifida than the UK possibly due to the lack of folic acid available to expectant mothers and a fungus which grows on maize.
Living in Kenya with Spina Bifida has its challenges mainly due to the lack of medical resources available to deal with this condition but mostly because there is no NHS and no private health insurance company will cover children born with congenital issues.
So my brother and his wife have an unknown path ahead, both emotionally and financially. This page is my very personal fundraiser to send Tim and Kari funds for Marley's medical account which they have set up for her future. This account will be drawn upon for anything from catheters, leg correcting braces to repeated operations on both her skull and spine.
The first of my personal fundraising challenges for my family begins Sunday 8th June with my first ever Sprint Triathalon.
