Manai's intended purpose of using the GFM site is to bring awareness to the desperate need to find his perfect bone marrow match and increase the current bone marrow registry for those who could be a match for someone else. People can send gifted money, it will be very much appreciated, but not required. Hi, we are seeking your financial gift to support Manai’s run to defeat cancer.
The Backstory
Manai Hazlett, 17, is the Varsity Running Back for the Del Norte Nighthawks High School Football team. On April 5, 2019, Manai was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. This has come as a shock not only to Manai and his parents, Steve and Shinano, but to all who know him.
Manai is kind and intelligent. He is a lifelong athlete, but he excels at and loves football. He finished the 2018 season as one of the top running backs in San Diego and has the dream of playing football in college. In the past, he has run through many tacklers to defeat his opponents. Now he needs your help to defeat his cancer. He is now in a very challenging position of protecting his life for the rest of his high school time. The great news is that Manai has started this challenge with a strong body, a positive attitude, and tremendous encouragement from his peers.
Prior to the diagnosis, over the last few months, he had been experiencing unusual fatigue after exercise, a chronic cough, breathing challenges, and it finally culminated with some unexplained swelling on his left pectoral. A chest x-ray showed a growth under his left chest region. He started chemotherapy on April 11, 2019. He received a major surgery where a device called a port was placed in the right side of his chest in order to provide him with less pain during blood draws and chemotherapy infusions over the next several years.
What's Ahead
Manai’s weekly chemotherapy sessions will continue for at least 5 months and then continue at less frequent intervals for an estimated 2.5 years. Manai’s response to chemotherapy so far has been positive. However, there have been days where he has been extremely fatigued with writhing headaches and had to miss school.
Unfortunately, these symptoms are expected to increase with greater frequency in the next few weeks and produce more unknown financial needs.
How To Help
The Hazletts are overwhelmed with the magnitude of the challenges Manai is facing, which include his continued education and the financial and logistical burdens associated with this major life development. The current scenario is not financially sustainable for their family and they need our help.
As such, all financial gifts will be used for medical co-pays, medical expenses or therapies not covered by insurance, tailored education needs for Manai, home modifications, increased utilities, transportation, food, lodging, possible relocation, and other accommodations related to his new normal.
Our Touchdown Target (Goal)!
The goal here is to raise $50,000 to offer the Hazlett Family hope, peace of mind, and relieve the stress and burdens of the known and unexpected expenses related to Manai’s needs in the coming weeks and months. My name is Susie Christianson and I live in Grand Junction, CO. I have known Manai’s mother and father for nearly 20 years from serving with Steve in the Marine Corps. I held baby Manai at 6 months old when I visited the Hazlett’s in Okinawa, where Steve and Shinano met.
With your help, we can make a difference in the Hazlett’s life right now so Manai can run through this very difficult time and his parents can be with him every step of the way.
