Medical Bills

October 14th 2013.. I received a voicemail that made my heart sink. It was the mother of Carla, who is one of my best friends. She called to inform me that Carla had been in a motorcycle accident. She was the passenger on the motorcycle that was T-boned by a car, the driver had not been paying attention and ran the light at the intersection. The car ran into Carla's left leg, resulting in a compound comminuted fracture of her distal femur and a fracture on her tibia, right where all the knee ligaments attach. The area of the femur that was broken was in 10 pieces. 



 
She's had to undergo 4 surgeries since October 14, and now has a PICC line in and is on I.V. antibiotics 3 times a day for the next few weeks. She cannot walk without the aid of a walker or crutches.

She has missed so much work due to her injuries and hospitalization that she was let go last Tuesday. She had insurance coverage through the end of May, but now she has to go COBRA which will cost over $350/month. On top of that, she has prescriptions to pay for, and the bills from the past 2 surgeries are rolling, and she still has outstanding balances from the first 2 surgeries.

She did not have health insurance at the time of the accident and was later informed by her insurance agent that the driver of the motorcycle that she was involved in the accident with, even though he had passengers on the bike on a regular basis, he did not carry insurance for passengers.

Carla received a small settlement from the accident, but it has barely helped cover medical expenses, rent and boarding her dog because she wasn't able to walk to take care of her after her surgeries. 

I wanted to do this fundraiser for my dear friend to try and help ease some of the burdens she's had since the accident.. Carla feels awkward about having a fundraiser because she doesn't want to ask for money, but I told her that sometimes people need help, and that this is what her friends are here for.. So if you can pitch in, even a couple of dollars it would help so much.
