An article in the New York Times published on March 15th, 2014 revealed that of the 3,200 children's books that were published in 2013, only 93 were about Black people. Referring to this reality as The Apartheid of Children's Literature, the article puts into perspective the message we send our young people when we omit them from the pages they read.
We are striving to bring culturally relevant texts into the community in which B.E.S.T. Academy is located and into the lives of the students in which we serve. We believe that having students reading and learning about people that share many characteristics with them will help them to identify how they can become the best that they can be. It is also our belief that bringing culturally relevant texts to our libraries connects students to their communities and uplifts the community through the process of reading and learning. A child that does not know where he or she comes from is a child that will be lost, always wondering who they are and what their purpose may be in their own lives.
