Independence 4 Shad

Shad Sexton was just 18 years old when a pool dive went horribly wrong and left him paralyzed.  Shad is now 20, 6'6" tall and weighs in over 250 pounds. Because of his large frame he cannot fit into regular vehicles. His Mom has to rent a van and Shad is hoisted in using a makeshift hoist from bungy cords. As you can see from the picture Shad lays flat on a mattress in the back of the van for all of his journeys away from home. 

Shad is an amazing young man with an optimistic attitude, trying to lead as normal a life as possible. He is enrolled in college, but is dependent upon others to get him wherever he needs to be; whether that is to his college or medical appointments. He is placed in the back of a van using the bungy hoist to get him in and out. A specialized custom vehicle will allow him to drive himself providing him with some independence.

This simple accident could have happened to any one of us or to our children. How many of us enjoyed diving into swimming pools? We are the lucky ones. That dive not only changed Shad's life forever, but the lives of everyone around him. He is dependent upon them for so much.
