We are Chicago dance artists seeking to raise money to produce a show of our choreographic work. As emerging artists this project will not only serve as an opportunity for our work to be exposed in the dance community, but it will also serve as a platform for other young artists to develop and expose their artistry. This project marks the beginning of our artistic endeavors as self-producing choreographers and we intend for these endeavors to continue and expand into the future.
The Coincidentals would like to announce FUNDRAISING: ROUND TWO. The generous support of all our donors this past summer has provided us with the resources to rehearse and develop our work, but our show is fast approaching along with the associated costs. We sincerely ask you to consider donating to The Coincidentals. This money will directly fund lighting and sound personnel, costuming, publicity, and marketing printing and distribution. If you have any questions about how exactly your money will be put to use, please send us an email!
We are also pleased to announce REWARDS for our donors!
-Donations of $100 or more will receive a hand-crocheted scarf or hat
-Donations of $50 or more will receive TWO complimentary tickets to the performance on February 26 or 27
-Donations of $25 or more will receive a DVD or link to a full video of the performance
-All donors will be honored at a reception following the performance on Thursday February 26
Piece Descriptions:
Natalia Alarcon's Politics of (in)accessibility: This notion of providing a platform, a space in which both the artists and the community have an opportunity to create and experience artistic expressions is imperative to our commitment to the enrichment and fulfillment of the arts. From this necessity and struggle to create the space in which the artist can grow and flourish is where I got the inspiration for my current exploration on the politics of the life as an artist, particularly the modern dancer. Accessibility being the primary cause of this issue, modern dance as an art form is not only inaccessible for the potential viewers/audiences, but also for the performers and the dance makers themselves who often have to rely on unrelated career paths in order to make a living and sustain their artistic endeavors. Politics of (in)accessibility explores these issues along with the duality that exists between the aristocratic bureaucracy surrounding the art form and its autonomous and revolutionary nature.
Feuerhelm's work explores how one’s emotional and intellectual past shapes the present. As an avid crochet-er, Lydia finds interest in incorporating needle and fiber arts into her performance work. This piece uses arm knitting and the act of raveling and unraveling as a catalyst for the action of the work.
Corliss's work examines notions of home and imagined heritage, which she intersects with the realities of homelessness and displacement. The work looks closely at the tools that give people a sense of connection across time and the things that trigger memories or nostalgia for home. Using folk and traditional music, the piece explores feelings of belonging, homesickness, and nostalgia in order to interrogate a human desire to be connected to a place and history.
