Maribeth Ellis Olberding Memorial Scholarship Fund
Presented by the Sisters of Sigma Kappa
Maribeth Lyn Ellis Olberding will always be remembered as a dedicated sorority sister, inspiring educator, loving mother, and a witty friend with a radiant smile. She was initiated as a charter member of the Theta Nu chapter of Sigma Kappa at Baylor University on February 18, 1989. While at Baylor, Maribeth helped organize Sigma Kappa’s inaugural performance in the All University Sing program in February 1990. Maribeth graduated from Baylor in 1991 with a degree in Math Education and then received her Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Dallas. Maribeth’s involvement with Sigma Kappa continued as she served as an advisor to the Theta Gamma chapter at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Maribeth’s love for teaching and for mathematics blended into a career as an assistant professor at New Mexico State University where she taught math education courses and mentored future educators. In addition to teaching, Maribeth volunteered at her daughters’ school, was actively involved in Girl Scouts, and was a self-professed “dance mom.” Although breast cancer took her from us on May 28, 2014, memories of Maribeth’s smile, her quick wit, and her snorts of laughter will be with us forever.
Sigma Kappa legacies Della Lyn and Lila Kay are Maribeth’s two young daughters. Because education and Sigma Kappa have played such an important in Maribeth’s life, the sisters of Sigma Kappa would like to present a monetary donation to Bruce Olberding, Maribeth’s college sweetheart and husband of 20 years, to be used for Della Lyn and Lila Kay’s education fund. It is our hope that Della Lyn and Lila Kay will know that the sisters of Sigma Kappa stand behind them and will keep the memory of their mother alive in our hearts forever. One Heart, One Way!
