Kasi Goes to Austen-Coley Project

Dear friends,

We are here to humbly ask for help to provide specialized education for our daughter Kasi Jewel. She has recently been diagnosed with severe dyslexia and expressive language disorder. Looking at our beautiful young lady, one would not know the inner turmoil and anxiety that she faces everday. Kasi is a loving child who likes animals, drawing, dancing and playing with her big brother and baby sister. She is kind and compassionate and is always looking to help others. We hope her story inspires you to reach out and help her.

As parents we all want our children to have the tools to be successful in any endeavor. I believe that Kasi's future truly hinges on learning the adaptive tools offered at Austen-Coley Academy. Raising this money will cover her tuition for one academic year. We have been advised by 3 public school teachers  that  without specialize help Kasi will undoubtably fall through the cracks in the public school sytem.

I would like to share with you dear friends and Go Fund Me supporters how her life is affected by this difficult learning disablity.

Because of her reading and writing skills Kasi suffers from emotional anxiety not only in the classroom but in daily activities. While she is able to comprehend the material at her grade level, her expressive language disorder makes it hard for her to use words that she knows and she has short term memory problems. Because of this anxiety, Kasi has a problem performing tasks. She is so insecure about her abilities and is so scared of embarrassing herself that she hangs back. While other kids act confidently, she lacks this spontaneity.

In addition, decision making is very difficult for her. For instance, most children are able to pick an outfit to wear or can name their favorite movie, but Kasi is immobilized by the decision making process. When she is pressed to make these decisions she is easily frustrated by the stress and often gets to the point of tears. This is a common occurance. The root of all these problems can be helped by getting Kasi the right teaching methods to help her dyslexia and language disorder.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the high school dropout rate for students with learning disabilities is more than twice what it is for other students (36 percent compared with 14 percent).Youth with untreated dyslexia are more likely than their nondyslexic peers to drop out of high school and become unemployed, underemployed, or incarcerated. We are determined to keep Kasi from falling into these statistic if you can please help and share her story; no amount is too small!
