Papa's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
For many years, our family has lived a blessed life in our Northern New Jersey home. Our big, tight-knit household complete with two grandparents, two parents, three children and a dog is something many dream of. Unfortunately, on May 22, 2014 something happened that would drastically change the structure and lifestyle of our entire family. My grandfather, Papa David, had become very ill quite suddenly and needed to be rushed to the hospital. After waiting days to hear what had happened, we were finally told that he had a hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding centrally located in the brain) due in part to an aspirin regimen prescribed to him following a cardiac surgery. Now, after weeks of trying our best to be there for our grandfather, it has become clear that the road to recovery will be long, difficult and very costly.
In the days following his accident it had become all too apparent that our grandfather had changed. A once lively man who told tales of the near and far past now struggled to remember the names of his beloved wife, children and grandchildren. At times, Papa will forget where he is, what has happened and that he needs to comply with the recommendations of his healthcare team to achieve full recovery and come home.
Due to the severe nature of his condition, he was evaluated and admitted to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, a nationally recognized rehabilitation center. This facility, as compared to the hospital he was diagnosed in, provides the constant and holistic attention needed to keep Papa safe and well on his road to recovery. Now, several weeks since his becoming ill, it still is not clear how long he will need to be at the Kessler Institute. Doctors say he will be here for a few weeks, and still need 24 hour supervision for a long time after his discharge. It may take months for him to start remembering and gain cognitive abilities back. The mounting medical costs, which include transportation (ambulances), hospital room fees, medications, scans/tests, the fees for residency at Kessler,  and various specialists have quickly become insurmountable to our grandmother and the rest of our family who has struggled to provide support.
In what will undoubtedly be looked back on as a terribly difficult time for our family, we ask our friends, neighbors and fellow stroke victim families to consider donating to Papa's Road to Recovery Fund. While the costs have exceeded $10,000 and continue to climb, every cent contributes to helping our grandfather heal and bring our family together once more. We thank you for your consideration and generosity in this trying time.
