Support for Liam

Liam is the 2-1/2-year old son of Chris and Angela Young.  On October 24, he was taken by LifeFlight to the University of Iowa Hospital and admitted to the PICU with what was believed to be an infection causing kidney and liver failure.  Shortly after his arrival to U of I, he coded and had to be resuscitated.  He was then put into a medication-induced coma and put on a ventilator.  He received a blood transfusion and was started on dialysis.  On October 26, his medical team started him on broad-spectrum antibiotics to try to fight any infection that was attacking his body.  They also started doing plasmapheresis, which is a procedure in which whole blood is taken from a person and separated into plasma and blood cells; the plasma is removed and replaced with another solution, such as saline solution, albumin, or specially prepared donor plasma; and the reconstituted solution is then returned to the patient.  He will be receiving plasma exchanges for the next few days until test results come in.  He continues to be sedated and on the ventilator and receiving continuous dialysis.  Liam is also having complications of lack of blood flow to his hands and feet, and a vascular specialist has been called in to work with his medical team.  Liam is able to voice that he has pain and a pain specialist is also going to be involved in his care. 

Currently, there is no diagnosis for Liam, but his team is working diligently to find an answer for why he is so ill.  He will be in the PICU for an extended period and has a long road to recovery.
