Legal Fees for Baby Dot

Donation protected
Baby Dot is a 14 month old girl who was dropped off at our house two months ago. Her parents are unable to care for her because of homelessness and drug use. We are committed to caring for her for the rest of her life.

In order to do this, we must obtain legal guardianship, an action which is supported by Dot's mom. However, the legal and court fees will likely top $5000. We are asking for help to secure  her in her first stable home.

If you are able to donate even a little, it will contribute substantially to the well-being and happiness of a great kid who has great potential!

FAQ's

How did Dot end up in your house?

Dot was literally "dropped off" one evening and we have had her ever since. We thought we were helping out a friend of a friend for the weekend. A couple of days turned into a couple of months...and Dot is here to stay.

Why do you want to do this? It's a huge commitment.

We want to see Dot break the cycle of poverty and addiction. We want her to be happy. We want to make sure she never has to go into another transitional home, and that she can rely on the stability of one family that loves her. She brings us a lot of joy and happiness, too. We get what we give.

Why you? Why not send her to Child Protective Services or some other agency?

Dot has already been through a few homes and caregivers. One more transition might just break this wonderful, loving, smart little girl. We don't intend to test that. She loves us. We love her, too. We're keeping her with us.

Where will all of this money be used?

The money we are requesting will go to court fees (approximately $700 to file a guardianship request) and legal fees that could go as high as $5000. There are sufficient complications and uncertainties with her case that we are using an attorney who specializes in adoption and custody.

What if there is extra money left over?

Any extra money will go into a fund dedicated to ensuring Dot's future success in life. This will include additional legal proceedings and educational opportunities. It will not include daily care requirements such as food, clothing, supplies or transportation, which are to be covered by us, the guardians. If there is still money in the fund when Dot turns 18, it will be hers to claim.
