What do you get when shelter-in-place orders (because of Covid-19) mixes with cramped living spaces ?
The community group 120 Marcus Meets Malcolm (120mmm).
To strengthen our community during this stressful time, we developed the project, "Take Back the Street". We developed creative programing that engaged the residents in various street interactions for adults and children. All activities utilizing facial coverings and social distancing techniques.
Timeline
5th May, 2020 - group formed
7th May, 2020 - first event (dancing in the street)
25th June, 2020 - officially part of the NYC Open Streets program, which allows us to close the street during the day.
120 Marcus meets Malcolm, can become self sufficient with your help. Your donation will provide seed funding in order to create the building blocks of self sufficiency. Funding allows us to further provide safe programing for adults and children. The following are programing ideas:
Use oversized games for interactive play among residents
Arts/crafts - sewing, cooking, fishing, collages for residents
Art programming /classes for residents and community
Discussions about various topics impacting the community
Adult and children reading clubs for the community
An International film festival for residents
In collaboration with various educators, create "Storytime" for our children
Our mission is community building, not only on our street, but the greater community of Harlem and beyond. In addition to what we do on our street, we intend to provide art education for some students in Harlem, by partnering with artists (International and local) as well as not-for-profit organizations and creating art opportunities, mentorship opportunities and residencies.
We need your help.
