Support for Shanna

Donation protected
We're starting this fundraising page to assist our sister, Shanna, and her family in what has been the biggest struggle of their lives.

For approximately four years, Shanna was suffering from chronic back pain as well as a gradual loss of mobility.  After repeated appointments with specialists here in Kingston, her local Neurosurgeon determined she had cysts growing from her spine, and would not take any further action.  After her mobility declined at a rapid rate around the new year, her Family Doctor sent in an emergency referral to a Neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital who specializes in spinal surgeries, Dr. Eric Massicotte.  It was Dr. Massicotte who determined that the cysts were not the issue, and that the majority of her spine was in fact full of a massive ependymoma tumour.  When he and his team discovered this and booked her for an emergency surgery, she had already lost the function of the lower half of her body.

Shanna had her spinal surgery done on March 6, 2017, and has been nothing short of amazing in her recovery and physical rehabilitation.  The damage from the tumour and consequent surgery has devastatingly made Shanna currently a parapalegic and bound to a wheelchair.  As anyone can imagine, this has been traumatic for her and the entire family; however, she has been incredible in her spirit and motivation to one day walk again.

After months of hospital stay - first at Toronto Western Hospital, then Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Lyndhurst Centre, and finally at Providence Care Hospital in Kingston - it is time for Shanna to go home.  This will be a very trying time for her to adjust to life in a wheelchair.  She will finally be home with her husband, Andrew, and four year old daughter, Azizah, though - something she has been longing for for six months.

Shanna and Andrew have found a wonderful home to begin this new journey - however, to get the home properly equipped is extremely expensive.  Between her wheelchair, ramps, lifts, sliding boards etc., even with benefits, they are looking at having to spend thousands of dollars.  This is on top of their continued travel back and forth to Toronto for Shanna's continuing appointments with her Neurosurgeon as well as her Oncologist at Sunnybrook Hospital.

Shanna would always step in and be there for everyone else, but would never ask for the help for herself...so, as her sisters, we wanted to start this fund on her behalf.  Any little amount will help and be extremely appreciated during this very difficult time.

Thank you so much!
