Since I was very young I have been a part of and loved the church, but at many times throughout my life I have felt that the church didn’t love me. Whether it was feeling called to ministry in a church that didn’t ordain women or being part of a church that didn’t accept or welcome queer people, I know what it’s like to live in the midst of two worlds and not feel like you belong in either of them. Very early on, I felt called to start a church where people who had experienced what it felt like to be pushed out of church would be welcome. I studied youth ministry and communications in college, worked at numerous churches, went to seminary, and worked through the ordination process; through it all, my calling to start a new church only got stronger.

When I moved to Minneapolis, I settled into a community for the first time in years. I found a group of people in the independent Catholic movement who love and support me. It was finally time to do what God had been calling me to do all of these years. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul have a huge Catholic population, but they also have a huge population of people who consider themselves ‘recovering Catholics’. These are folks who have been so hurt by the church, often because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, because they use birth control, or because they are divorced. I’ve talked with many people who have walked away from the church not because they didn’t love God anymore, but because they felt that the church didn’t want them!

No one should have to feel like they cannot worship God in the tradition that moves and feeds them.

House of the Transfiguration started our launch group in April of 2013 and has gone from just my sense that God wanted me to do this, to a small community of ten folks, with dreams to reach even more people.

We believe that this community is special. We are a people who are being transformed by God so we can transform our city. We believe that we are creating a unique space where people can come together to experience the ritual and tradition they love, a space that nourishes and feeds them, and where they can be themselves. We believe that we can be a community that works for justice in our neighborhoods and city.

For the last several years I have been supporting myself by working full time, then coming home and putting in many hours every day on projects that I believe in. I want to spend even more time doing the work that I care about; I cannot do it without your investment.

I don’t take any kind of salary or stipend from House of the Transfiguration; all of the money given to the church goes to support the mission of the community. There isn’t a lot of support for liberal church planters from conventional outlets, but I believe that a community coming together can change this attitude and make something special happen.

Your investment in me and in my work matters. Together we can make a difference in the lives of so many people.

I need to raise $25,000 of support for the year (or just a little over $2000 a month). This will allow me to focus full time on the church, writing, and ministering to people on the margins.

Would you consider investing in me by committing to a certain support level every month? Or would you consider making a one time investment?
