The reason I have begun this fund is because I have been presonally affected by it. All of my family,from both my mothers and fathers side is from this region. I on the other hand was born and raised here in North America. In the lands of opportunity and abundance. The region of the Balkans is far from that. Over the past week, the Balkans have been hit by severe flooding which is the result of the heaviest rains in more than 120 years. Over 1,000,000 people have been affected, over 70,000 have been evacuated and more than 50 have lost their lives in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. I haven't been able to sleep and can't take a seat back and watch these people suffer from the comfort of my home here. I don't want to feel helpless and most of all, I still haven't lost all faith in humanity. I believe that we can achieve an amazing goal here on this site and help these poor people.
The devastation that these floods have brought are enormous! It will take years to rebuild! These people have no insurance...they have no way to repair this damage alone. The vast majority are farmers and have even lost all of their animal livestock and fields that are their only source of income. I want to go in and provide money to repair and rebuild homes that have been completey lost and purchase livestock animals so they can have a source of income to feed themselves and the rest of the community again.
As well as the elderly!!! There are so many that have no family or loved ones to help them through this. They cannot be forgotten!
I am gathering donations on here to help these poor people and I am doing it in the honour of my fallen brother in-law Cst. John Zivcic who passed away in December...two days later in hospital after being involved in tragic accident while he was on duty. I have already joined forces with an incredible organization called Global Medic and as of last night, May 23rd they have already deployed a team with emergency water purification units and tablets to provide clean water to the people. But that is only a temporary solution...I (we) need more help....PLEASE!
