Semper Fi Service Dogs is an organization that came out of the hearts of Ryan Onda and Debbie Kalmus. Ryan is a Marine Veteran who has dealt with trauma both on and off the field. With a love and special gift for training dogs, his heart is the soul of our program. Debbie has been in charge of several outreach programs and has had the privilege to meet many veterans who have had to struggle to make it through each day. She's an avid dog lover and feels that she and Ryan were brought together for the same mission....to bring both veterans and dogs together as a way to not only mutually help, but heal both.
Semper Fi Service Dogs is dedicated to working not only with local shelters to find dogs that have a potential to be trained as service dogs, but also to help train those veterans who may already have their dogs. Ryan has successfully placed 26 shelter dogs with veterans, who regularly participate in weekly training and outings to keep themselves and their dogs in top shape. They also meet several times during the week for socialization and training of the veterans and their dogs at different locations all over Palm Beach County.
According to Freedom Service Dogs, the cost of a trained Service Dog can be as much as $25,000 or more. It is the goal of Semper Fi Service Dogs to provide a trained Service Dog to a qualified veteran at no cost.
Why do we do this? Statistics show each day 22 veterans commit suicide. Our mission is to reduce that number down to zero or as close as possible by providing a companion that understands and loves them unconditionally. A companion that can help them reduce their need for medication and give them the freedom and ability to live their life to the fullest, but we can't do this without your help! We're just in the infant stages of our company and the need is growing each and everyday! Your support will help us find, train and place a dog with a veteran in need and hopefully reduce the rate of veteran suicide by just one more!
