You Can't Stop A Dexter

Donation protected

Hi my name is Jillian. Dexter is my handsome, amazing and precocious Lab/Chow mix, just shy of his second birthday. He was adopted from a local rescue the day we went into quarantine and we have spent a lot of time together. He loves stealing your socks and at 7pm on the nose he will boss you relentlessly for a peanut butter Kong. He is the best snuggler, hiking buddy, and studio mate I could ask for.

On Wednesday afternoon I received a call on my way home from work from my husband, who witnessed Dexter being struck by a car. I was 20 minutes from home and traveling behind a most frustratingly responsible citizen traveling at exactly the 50 mph speed limit. Shaking and scared I pulled into my drive 20 minutes later. Dexter had bolted, probably from shock, and was lost and injured somewhere in the woods near our home. We searched and called but it was over an hour and nearly dark when I caught sight of him at the bottom of a steep incline near a stream bed. I don't know how, but he managed to get to me.

When I saw him my heart shattered. His beautiful body was broken, an open fracture on his left hind leg, a large open wound the size of a grapefruit on the knee, and the rear right leg badly mangled. Contusions and cuts covered his body and he was bleeding badly. With the help of a neighbor's ATV we were able to get him home and into the car where we rushed hime to the nearest open Pet E.R.

At this time he is still fighting for his life. They were able to stabilize the bleeding that night and splint the fractured leg Thursday morning. Both legs are wrapped in honey bandages and he is on an IV and has a catheter. He has a pneumothorax, meaning his lungs are filling with air and threatening collapse. As a result, he has been set up with chest tubes on both sides to help remove the air and ease his breathing. The pneumothorax is life threatening and no anesthesia can be performed while it is still an issue. It has been 72 hours since the chest tubes were put in place and they are still pulling large amounts of air off of both sides. The resolution of the pneumothorax will be one of the greatest determining factors for whether or not he will be able to come home.

All of this has been exhausting emotionally and financially and we are not puppared. Our anticipated vet expenses are now $25,000 on the low end. I have never done a Go Fund Me, but this expense is beyond what we are able to manage on our own. Your donation will help cover the costs of pain medication, treatment, bandages, and surgery. If you can help in any way, we would be forever grateful. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and Dexter thanks you, too!
