When Lisa was born, she didn't have sight in either eye.
She was born with the elongated iris that is diagnosed as
Colaboma and severe astigmatism.
My Mother and Grandmother took her to the last tent meeting of Oral Roberts in Anaheim, Calif. when she was about 6 months old.
He laid hands on her eyes and she starting reacting to light for the first time. I had to cover her head with a light blanket, because she was turning her head away from the direction of the light.
At about 2 years of age Grandpa Bal, my granddads
step father, arranged for them to take her to the Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles, Calif. For 3 years every 6 months they took her for examination from multiple Doctors and Interns.
They determined they could fit her with glasses at 3 years of age.
At which time they determined she could have surgery at about 16 yrs.of age to attach the retina in her right eye.
Sight in her right eye began to deteriorate and the Drs. told us
the optical nerve was not functioning.
So surgery would not be feasible.
At age 5, she had surgery to correct her eyes from crossing. The Surgeon loosened the muscles on the inside corners of both eyes and tightened the muscles on the outside of her eyes.
Once again they told us that she would probably not be able to drive because the right eye had no function, and the astigmatism was too severe.
In school she needed to be right up close to the blackboard in order to see her assignments. When she was in kindergarten the teacher wanted to hold her back, but they said no, because they knew she needed to be challenged if she was going to
advance.
They did not treat her any different than any of us. She was expected to carry her own load around the home.
However, she did have tutors from time to time that helped her with being able to read. She had access to a magnifying glass that she held in front of her book. Even with glasses she needed the magnifying glass.
Now that she is a single mother and supporting her and her children this is the only time she has EVER asked for help for her eyes.
She has severe astigmatism in here left eye and now has a cataract. She needs surgery for the cataract and also to put a lens in to correct the astygmatism. Once this is done her vision in the left eye will be greatly improved.
The cost for the surgery is $2100.00 plus the loss wages for the weeks and other costs associated (prescriptions, etc.) comes to $3500.00. Any help you can give Lisa would be greatly appreciated as she is a single mom on a single income.
