My wonderful family consists of my compassionate, brilliant and hard-working wife Haley, as well as my healthy, strong and delightful toddler, Jayden. I was very proud when I graduated with a Master's in Clinical Psychology. I put in the long hours and requirements to earn my license. All the while, a mysterious illness was growing in intensity.
Five years ago, I began to have abrupt and profound episodes of severe pain and chronic, debilitating fatigue. The episodes came with no warning and lasted 2-3 days per episode. Finally, I was diagnosed with Severe Poly-Inflammatory Rheumatoid Arthritis. Within this past year, I have lost my ability to maintain any kind of work, or to be able to do the kind of nature hikes and activities my wife and I have long loved.
For now, I do my best to support our family by being the "house manager"; and resting the majority of the time in-between. I now have weekly flairs and continue to be in severe nerve, joint and muscle pain, as well as constant, deep fatigue and nausea. The condition is so pervasive, that I've had to file for Social Security Disability. I will never give up on my goals of returning to my therapy practice as well as becoming a teacher and author. I know this for myself and continue to do all that is within my power to be well.
I am working with an excellent team of physicians and healers who are collaborating to find the right combination of treatments and medications that will put the RA, chronic fatigue and nerve pain into remission. Until that time -- and until my case is won with Social Security Disability -- my family is unable to pay the large medical, cost-of-living and daycare bills that are creating an untenable financial situation for us.
