Ocular Melanoma is a very rare incurable form of cancer of the eye.
Approximately 50% of patients will develop metastatic disease of the original diagnosis, and once the liver is involved the cancer is currently incurable.
The most common place for ocular melanoma to spread is into the liver. Other common sites of metastases include the lungs, bone and the brain, although tumours can be anywhere in the body as they are spread via the blood stream.
There are currently no treatments available for this particular type of cancer once it spreads to the Liver. Standard Chemo may be offered however this has no efect on Ocular Melanoma and therefore this treatment is pointless.
New and upcoming treatments such as Delcath are currently on clinical trials however funding is an issue and as of yet this of these treatments isn't curerntly available on the NHS.
As you know my mum is lucky enough to have benefited from 4 Delcath treatments which has given her a further 3 years! As well as a liver resection and immunotherepy. There are currently funding issues re Delcath trials.
With no liver directed treatment...she is in danger.
We now need to raise £30,000 to pay for a treatment called SIRTS which is a liver directed threatment. This is not available to her on the nhs however if she were to have a different type of cancer, one not so rare such a bowl cancer then she could have SIRTS on the nhs.
We also continue to travel to Southampton every 3 weeks for her to receive immunotherepy to treat the extra hepatic disease.
She needs this treatment ASAP! The liver tumors have been untreated since February...6 months! Tteating the liver tumors works, clearly...she is still going strong 3 years since initial mets!
Please help us by pledging iust £1 and asking a friend to do the same. Spread the word and help us...please.
