Mike's Medical

My brother is Michael Hearn ( Mike ). He is 64 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes about 20 years ago. He retired in 2015 after serving his community in Oscoda, Michigan as a police officer for 27 years. After he retired he and his wife Debby found that they could no longer afford health insurance. His entire police pension would only cover his insurace premium with a $10,000 deductible policy. Mike tired to make it to 65 years old where medicaid would kick in, but was not able to make it. He broke his foot around the 4th of July, 2017, and was having neuropathy in his feet so couldn't feel just how bad the break was. Since he thought is was only bruised he kept walking on it, which only made things worse. As a result, he developed a diabetic ulcer on the bottom of his foot which became severely infected. After being coaxed into going to a doctor by his wife, Mike was shocked when he was told that he only had a 30% chance of keeping his foot. With extensive antibiotic therapy and a very gifted orthopedic surgeon (Dr. Davis), his foot was pinned back in place and saved. Many prayers were answered. In short, after paying into Medicaid and social security his whole working life, he is being told that he does not qualify for medical assistance because his police pension is too high, which barely covers his living expenses. When I told Mike that I wanted to make a request for donations through Go Fund Me, he immediately said that there were too many others in Houston and other parts of our country who needed more help then he did. I wanted to put it out this request anyway, because my brother has been a hard working man who gave many years helping others as a police officer, and I would love to see others give back to him.
