As some of you know Nick Davern has been suffering from a very rare disease for some years now. Over the last year, his health has deteriorated greatly. He has lost the use of both hands and has drop foot in both feet. The muscles in his arms and legs are severely atrophied. The disease takes a progressive course to complete disability. He has lost the ability to play music and do simple everyday tasks.
Over the course of the last nine years he has undergone a multitude of treatments that have sometimes caused remission, but never a cure.
He now has the opportunity to participate in a cutting edge treatment that can save his life. The treatment is a clinical trial called Hematopoietic Stem cell Transplant (HSCT). It has been shown to be highly effective where other treatments have not, and can cause complete remission and sometimes a full recovery of lost motor function. The treatment is very aggressive and Nick will be out of work for 6 or more months to recover.
While insurance will cover a portion of the cost Nick will still incur medical costs, airfare and hotel costs and missed wages during the time of his recovery. He will be in Chicago for 2 months in quarantine to recieve high dose Chemotherapy with refractory stem cell rescue. We are looking to those that love and care about him to contribute in whatever way they can to lessen the burden on himself and his family.
