A Deserving Trip for A Great Kid!!

Donation protected
UPDATE: (5/20/2014)
WOW!!!  I cannot begin to tell you how amazed I was by this.  So many people came through for Colton and Shawna.  I am deeply moved by all of your generosity.  I wish I could see each of you in person to thank you, but that obviously isn't practical.  So one big THANK YOU! will have to do at this time.  You were all so selfless and caring with your donations and willingness to spread the word.  For those of you who donated who I know, it was very nice to see your names and comments.  It makes me proud to be associated with such a caring place as Perrydale.  For those of you who saw this through my wife's conatcts, I am at a loss for words for to express my gratitude for your willingness in helping a kid you do not even know.  And for those of you who already know Colton, I am sure he is humbled by your kindness.  Some of you wondered where the extra oney might go.  The trip was paid off at 6:30AM and now he has some spending money and some to help cover the medical expenses his mother has.

Check back for potos on Facebook or here during our trip in June.  You are all incredible.  Thank you again!

Hello Everybody:

Thank you for visiting this page.  I need your help...

I am a teacher and coach at Perrydale High School, which is located near Dallas, Oregon.  I am starting this collection to help a deserving student, Colton Thomas, raise funds to attend a trip we have in FOUR WEEKS!!

We will be visiting Washngton DC, Williamsburg, Philadelphia, and New York on June 16th-June 24th.  I had a last minute cancellation on the trip and had an extra spot open up. Unfortuantely, this trip will cost approximately $2600, and I have a student who would love to go, but his family cannot afford to send him at this time due to fiancial difficulties.

Colton's mother, Shawna, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer this year and obviously the medical bills are mounting with doctor visits and her chemotherapy.  The cancer spread to her liver and her chest & lungs.  I was fortunate to see her the other night at our annual school auction and she was bright and cheery, even with all that is going on.  She is a fighter!

Her three sons have stepped up to help this single mother with her financial obligations and getting by everyday with the emotional rollercoaster she faces as she continues to battle this horrible diagnosis.  Colton started a gofundme.com site in February which raised over $7000 to help the family get by as his mother was out of work due to her illness.  His grandparents moved in to help offset costs and there are now six people living in a two bedroom house.  When I approached his mother about trying to raise funds for the trip, she said that she would donate to the fund.  Of course that idea was turned down because we want her to foucs on her health.

If you do not know Colton, please let me introduce him to you...

Colton is a Sophomore and currently serves as our Student Body President.  He is an empathetic, kind-hearted, generous person who is comitted to making everybody around him a better person--including me.  He thinks of others before himself and makes people laugh like few other students I have had before. People cheer up when they are around him.  He is a loving son and brother who is dedicated to his family and friends.  He created a colon cancer awareness week at school in honor of his mom.  Colton is a genuine person who I have had the pleasure of teaching and coaching while he has been here at Perrydale.

So why am I writing all of this?

When I was talking about the upcoming trip to our Nation's capital today, Colton said he wished he could afford to go on a trip like this.  He has traveled with me before and he said that was the greatest time in his life and he could really use a pick-me-up like that right now with everything going on in his life.  As a teacher--heck just as a person--that melted my heart a little.  I knew I had to do something.  Here is where you come in--please donate whatever you can or spread the word.  $10, $20, $100, heck even $5 would be appreciated.  I spoke with EF Explore America (tour group organizers) today and they said due to the timing of the airline ticketing, the price of the trip will probably go up 24 hours from NOW.  That is right, WE HAVE 24 HOURS TO TRY AND COLLECT $3000 ($2600 for the trip and a little spending money for the trip).  If we are short of our goal and Colton cannot afford to realize this dream, all of the proceeds will go to his family to help them with costs associated with Shawna's battle with colon/liver/lung cancer.  Please help us help a deserving kid go on a trip that will undoubtedly give him an opportunity to just be a kid--even if it is just for a little over a week.

Thank You!
