SPACE CAMP TURKEY

10 students at Wiley Park Girls High, a local girls school located in Sydney's south west, have been offered a wonderful opportunity to be the first young Australians students to experience a unique educational experience at the internationally renowned Space Camp Turkey, departing 28 June this year.
The tour is being led by Ms Jackie Slaviero who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes over the last six months to bring it all together. Accompanying the girls will be Ms Maureen Davis-Catterall, the school principal who, without her support and dedication to the future of her students this project would not have happened, and Mr Murray Henstock, one of the school's science teachers who attended the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program last year and has since brought a renewed vigor for space science to the school.
Thanks to the Global Friendship Through Space Education Fund, 12 scholarships were given to Wiley Park Girls High School to attend Space Camp Turkey in Izmir in July of this year.
“I truly believe this will be a life changing experience – a springboard into a bright future,” says Jackie Slaviero, the leader of this expedition who secured the scholarships.
Located in the Aegean Free Zone, Izmir, Space Camp Turkey is the only such facility of its kind in the region and represents an exciting opportunity for students from all over the world to not just experience the thrill and excitement space science can offer but also the chance to interact and learn from different cultures and identities represented by the attendees.
At Space Camp they will experience astronaut training, shuttle simulations and space exploration mission simulations. They will experience zero-G, and the 1/6th Gravity Chair to feel what its like to walk on the moon. They will engage in robotics, rocketry, and a range of space related experiments designed to expand their science and mathematical knowledge and skills and they will learn what it takes to travel to, work and live both in space, on the moon and on other planets. They will have a front row seat and a hand-in learning about our very future.
But this study tour is not just about Space Camp. Our students will also have the opportunity to explore cross curriculum experiences by visiting and seeing ancient history first hand in the ruins of Ephesus and Troy. They will experience modern history with a visit to Gallipoli and Lone Pine. On their travels they will gain experiences and culture, language, geography, textiles and design, visual arts, music and dance just to name a few. Each one aimed to enhance their learning by making it real and in context with the wider global community.
“Where else can students gain a hands-on personal experience with the science and technology of tomorrow whilst at the same time experience the wonders of the ancient world?” declared Murray Henstock, one of the organising teachers.
"If I had the chance to go to Turkey, I would feel that this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit all the places that have a story to tell,” stated Shannon-Paige, one of the students selected to go.
"I'm looking forward to seeing what they saw and trying to understand what they felt. I want to know what's going on in their minds," Iman said of her impending visit to Gallipoli.
In the lead-up to our departure in late June of this year both students and teachers have been fund raising to assist with the costs associated with such a grand and wonderful educational experience. But we are not there yet.
It is calculated in order to take 10 students and their 3 teacher chaperones, the cost is in excess of $75,000.
Each participant therefore is doing their best to raise and contribute funds towards the common goal.
The funds being sought will supplimenting the cost for the students attending. It is only a portion of the overall goal but it will help many of the girls and their families in their efforts to make this project a success.
The students who attend will be forever changed by this experience. They will have witnessed learning first hand that most only ever read about in text books, or watch on TV. They will return home with renewed vigour and with a desire to contribute back to their community.

Additional funds raised will be used to support the development of documented footage and resources that can be used to celebrate this historic adventure as well as enhance the learning of those back in the classroom.
