Please Help Last Hope Animal Rescue Raise Money for Rudy’s Leg Surgery
RUDY is our 2 year old Pit mix with a bent, crippled front leg. He came to Last Hope as a stray from Town of Hempstead Shelter next door. The shelter asked us to take RUDY because he was extremely friendly, despite his disability, and would remain lost among over 100 Pits in their kennels.
RUDY is thrown off-balance because of the way his bent leg protrudes. We took him for a consult with an orthopedic specialist to find out if he was in pain, or would be as he ages. We asked Dr. Carver at NY Veterinary Specialists on Long Island if amputation would improve his mobility and ease his discomfort.
She said his leg injury was most likely due to trauma- possibly from a car, a fall, a difficult birth or being caught somewhere. His limb is contracted with severe atrophy. She called his injury a "partial brachial plexus avulsion" "which means neck and chest nerves were torn or ripped when his leg was injured. She felt if Rudy wasn't in pain now, he would be in the near future. She recommended amputation of Rudy's front leg.
RUDY will have his amputation surgery soon. Dr. Carver says there's a new technique with a nerve block during the operation which alleviates pain for 3 days following surgery, the worst time. The plan is for 4 days of hospital stay rather than the usual 2 because RUDY needs an additional day or two before being sent back to a shelter environment. If there was a foster home waiting for Rudy, it could be a shorter hospital stay.
We'd love for RUDY to have a foster home where he could recover in a relaxed setting. If not, we will help him recuperate at the Last Hope Dog Center in Wantagh.
The estimate for RUDY's amputation is $3,000. We are hopeful our "Rooting for RUDY" Go Fund Me will raise the funds needed for his operation so RUDY no longer struggles to walk or run.
