My daughter Alyssa is a true miracle. Separated from her twin sister Bethany at only 23 days old, Alyssa has undergone over 45 surgeries and faced major health issues for most of her life.
This year, the first ever conference of conjoined twins and their families is to be held in Minneapolis, USA. It will give Alyssa the opportunity to meet others just like her - a very rare occurrence and one that has never happened here in Australia. It will give her brother Isaac and myself a chance to meet other parents and siblings who have travelled a similar journey to ours.
And, it will give us possibly our only chance to meet doctors and specialists from all over the world who specialise in conjoined twins and the unique health problems they face, to consult with them regarding Alyssa's future surgeries and health problems and to take that knowledge and share it with our incredible doctors back here in Australia - not only for Alyssa's benefit but for maybe any other families in the future who may find themselves in circumstances like ours. It will allow us to participate in research projects to try to discover and understand more about conjoined twins and the how and why of the causes of conjoinment.
As a parent, it will allow me to give Alyssa possibly the greatest gift of all - a sense of belonging, of realising she is not alone, of finding her 'village'.
With further extensive surgeries looming, it also gives her some joy and excitement to sustain her through the tough times and memories that will last her forever.
Alyssa is my dream come true, please help me make her dreams come true.
