Abigail's LearnServe Jamaica trip

Hello all! My name is Abigail Moore and I am a Junior in the IB program at Parkdale High School. This summer I have been selected for the opportunity to travel abroad to Jamaica with the program LearnServe. LeanServe's mission is to send students to rural areas around the globe and have them aid these areas through projects such as repairing and building structures and teaching classes such as math, reading, science, and English to young students.
On the 2014 trip to Jamaica we will be visiting several locations over a period of two and a half weeks! Most of our time in Jamaica will be dedicated to teaching primary school students. This will entail us developing lesson plans, teaching the classes and striving to make learning fun. We will be working in collaboration with the Blue Mountain Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to identifying and combating the challenges those living in underdeveloped areas of Jamaica face daily.
I feel as though I am an excellent candidate for LearnServe because I have qualities that would make me a good teacher. I am flexible, motivated, and willing to reflect on my own methods and recognize where they are flawed. I am good with children and am very patient and kind with them. I have done lots of volunteer work in the past and understand what it means to serve others. I am a Senior Girl Scout and am currently working of my gold award project and I am involved in my church's youth group which I have volunteered through in the past, most notably with Habitat for Humanity last summer. Habitat for Humanity is an organization that constructs homes for families who otherwise would never be homeowners. I spent a week in Pocahontas County, West Virginia last summer building a house for a family of four whose mother is disabled and the father had a low paying job as a prison warden. Another reason I would like to go to Jamaica with LearnServe is that it would be an amazing experience for me! I would love to be able to embrace all Jamaica has to offer. I am deeply passionate about nature and would be thrilled to see the scenery of Jamaica with my own eyes. I hope that you will consider donating! Thank you for your time!
