After graduating from Elon University on May 24, 2014 I am preparing to spend one year in the region of Extremadura, Spain from September to May 2014 - 2015 to teach English before returning to the States to fufill a commitment to teach high school Spanish in Charlotte, NC through Teach for America. I was recently told that I will be in two different elementary schools in the city of Badajoz. After much prayer over the course of my senior year, I have felt called to be the hands and feet of Jesus through the North American Language and Culture Assistants (or Auxiladores) program. NALCA was created from a grant that the Education Ministry (Spanish government) was given to bring native English speakers into areas where students would not have the opportunity to learn the language otherwise.
Given the current severe economic crisis exacerbated in Southern parts of Spain, many young people are hoping to seek elsewhere to find work, making learning English that much more of a priority. Much different from my study abroad experience, I will be in a rural part of Spain in a small "pueblo" giving me the opportunity to interact with students that may have never been able to interact with an American in that capacity, and because of the extended time and financial inability to return back home for holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas will be able to develop meaningful relationships with the people of Extremadura.
However, given the massive amount I have to pay back in student loans from Elon University, and the small stipend I will be earning each month I need to raise money for start up costs including the plane ticket which is approximatly 1,200 dollars, program costs such as international health insurance, visa application, finding an apartment in Spain, and additional living expenses while there. I also don't want to be a burden to the school I will be working in and able to contribute to school costs, as I will be in a school with very little extra resources thus any lesson plan supplies I want will come from out of pocket expenses.
Any amount is grately appreciated. Donations can be made online through gofundme, or contact me directly to mail it/ direct deposit. If you are unable to contribute financially please help me spread the word of my trip so that people can be praying in advance for the work I will be doing over the year in Spain. I will also have a blog where I will be documenting my experience if you would like to keep up with what the Lord is doing in my life at http://anothertwentysomethingyearold.wordpress.com/.
