Help our friend Hakim with medical expenses

Donation protected
It is with a broken heart we need to let all our friends know that Nadula Hakim has been diagnosed with brain cancer. It is devastating news. Although Hakim made some poor choices, as we all are prone to do, Hakim is a man I cherish, a man who dedicated his life to helping others, to growing and leading others to productive lives. Hakim was one of our first employees and helped guide us for years. For me, he was more of a business partner than an employee. I don’t think I have ever gotten over his leaving AHI. I have missed him. And now, I may have to let him go forever.

We are surrounded by death - relatives, children, neighbors. Death is a constant, but this news about Hakim has hit us hard. The tumor is behind his eye and into the nasal cavity. It’s already impacted his sight, speech, memory, and ability to walk or care for himself or his family. Hakim has been more than a mentor to our staff and graduates. He has stayed a hidden member of AHI since leaving in 2018, sharing his wisdom and insights. He kept teaching soccer and training up young men to be more than they imagined. He kept changing lives.

Now it’s our turn to help him. We are setting up a GoFundMe account for our American friends to participate in helping to pay for his medical care and his current family needs. Kiyemba is taking Hakim to the hospice facility to see what care they advise. We are praying for home visits with pain management as its goal. It will be expensive whatever path is chosen – your help will make all the difference for his family and friends. Please know that any amount no matter how small will be appreciated.

Hakim will remain in the foundation of AHI; one of the reasons why there is much to celebrate here at AHI. We owe him greatly. We ask for your continued prayers for courage, for grace, for God’s love to comfort us and, in lieu of a miracle, to help us release him back to his Father who delights in him.

Among the jubilations, the cheers, and the ‘Well-Dones’,
behind the smiles and laughter
hides a grief, a cry, a confusion,
a sorrow vast and deep
a heartrending,
a tear in the soul
a tear in the eye
The world shifts,
A leaf falls.
A mentor is dying,
with a part of every one of us.
