Better Quality of Life for Darren

Donation protected
My brother Darren was hit by a car at age 6 and due to the resulting brain injury was left in a wheelchair classified as quadripalegic (Darren is not paralyzed however, but experiences severe spasms in his left arm). Darren is now 44 years of age. Up until 2007, our mother was his primary caretaker and he lived with her in Alberta. Our mother passed away from lung cancer in 2007 after a brief stay in a small town hospital. The hospital graciously admitted Darren into their long term auxilliary care home while our mother was ill so that she could still see Darren daily and not have to worry about him.

The nurses at the hospital have taken very  good care of Darren, however, it is a senior home. The hospital is also located in a very small community with no planned activities or outings that Darren can participate in. Darren currently spends his time watching television and playing computer games. He often complains of being bored, lonely and depressed. Any friends that he does make at the home (he is the youngest one), eventually pass away and Darren constantly experiences grief from the loss of his friends. The majority of Darrens immediate and extended family currently live in British Columbia. It is our goal to move Darren to a bigger centre with facilities suitable for persons with disabilites in British Columbia closer to family so that he can have visitors and live an independant active life. This will allow Darren to enjoy a much more quality lifestyle than what he currently experiences.

Darren is currently funded by the Alberta public healthcare system. His funds provide him with the cost of living and no additional money. This does not allow him to save towards moving to BC. If Darren moves to BC, he will have to live in BC for a full year or more before he can qualify to apply for funding through the British Columbia system. During this time, he would receive no income to pay for shelter, food, medical or personal expenses.

We would like to fundraise as much as possible, to go towards covering his expenses so that he can move to BC. We have talked to some homes in Kelowna (where we hope to have him placed) and the costs for residential alone could be $60,000.00 or more. This does not include any medical or personal costs.

Any contribution that could be made toward this, is very much appreciated!

Please help us to relocate Darren!!
