As many of you know, Julia has recently begun treatment for a very rare and, unfortunately, very serious cancer diagnosis. This has come as a great shock to everyone because there are few people who, over a lifetime, have taken greater care for mind, body and spirit than Julia. Through her work 25 years of work at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Julia has worked tirelessly to find ways to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable people within our community: people who have been traumatized, young women who struggle with depression, street-involved youth:. And long before knowledge exchange was the fashion, Julia established an email-based women's interest group that has informed and enriched the practice of countless professionals in the addictions and mental health field across Canada.
Many of you have asked about what you can do to help make her more comfortable, to instill hope, to provide her with something positive and beautiful. Julia has made a special request to have a painting by one of our long-time colleagues, Mara Korkola, who is both a graphic designer with CAMH and one of the most talented and accomplished painters working in Canada today (www.marakorkola.com). The request is apt not only because of their personal connection, but also because Mara's work has always sought to find poignancy and spiritual depth in even the most seemingly mundane and everyday moments.
The next months are promising to be very tough, and we hope that this gesture will help Julia while being a tangible expression of what she means to so many people. Please contribute what you can.
