SUPPORT WIDOWS, SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN

WEHAF, Widows Encouragement & HIV/AIDS Foundation, is a Tanzanian organisation, founded in 2017 by Theresia Mollel, that aims to empower widows, children and people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS to cultivate better lives for themselves and their families. Becoming a widow is always hard, but to become a widow after your husband has died due to HIV/AIDS creates a very difficult life in Tanzania. The women and their families lose their stable income, which in Tanzania is usually provided by the men, as well as also worrying they may lose their home since women move into their husbands house shortly after marriage. Sometimes women can end up homeless and without any income, so they try to open a business that ensures a sustainable source of income. As an answer to these problems, the NGO WEHAF was founded to empower those in need. Based in the outskirts of Arusha, the project aims to mobilise, motivate and advocate people in vulnerable situations in areas of health, social justice and economic empowerment.

 

At the moment there are 123 women registered in the organisation, who can attend sewing and baking classes as well as learn how to make paper bags for local shops and markets. Furthermore, WEHAF established a microfinance program, which also includes a business class. These projects help the women to become economically stable and earn their own money. Also the foundation supports the women with their medical expenses, whenever they need help.

 

Currently WEHAF is creating a sponsorship program for families in need, as well as building a day care for the women's children.

 

As an NGO WEHAF is still dependent on donations to continue and improve their work.

- Buy a new land to build a new place for them, at the moment there are 58 children from the mamas and they just have space for 13 children, and there are 123 mamas they need more space for new classrooms to learn sewing, how to make soup, paper bags, cooking, etc
