In December of 2013, Cody and I learned that we were expecting. Later on at 16 weeks pregnant we were told we were blessed with a sweet baby girl, Masyn Victoria.
At our 20 week ultrasound, the doctor told us they could not locate her cerebellum so he would refer us to Maternal Fetal Medicine so that they can take a closer look and rule out any abnormalities. Only then was it 2 weeks later at our ultrasound our little girl was diagnosed with an open neural tube defect, Spina Bifida.
Spina Bifida is a birth defect of the spine. Within the first 28 days of pregnancy the spinal column forms. In cases of Spina Bifida, the spinal colomn does not form and close completely. Leaving an opening which exposes the nerves and spinal cord. Some complications with this defect include hydrocephalus, or fluid buildup on the brain, bowel and bladder control issues, and difficulty walking.
Our MFM doctor there at Woman's Hospital referred us to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX for evaluation and consideration for an in-utero fetal intervention to repair the defect in Masyn's lower back to prevent any further nerve damage to her spinal cord.
On May 15, 2014, at 26 weeks pregnant, I underwent the surgery. I am now to remain here in Houston, TX for the remainder of my pregnancy. I have weekly appointment to monitor Masyn's progress, constantly checking for signs of hydrocephalus and movement of her lower extremities. I had to take a leave of absence from my job without pay in order to relocate here. We are currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House Houston which is twenty five dollars per day. I am also financially responsible for the portion that my insurance does not cover.
