Help Save Champ - Orphan Mustang Foal

Donation protected
Champ is an orphan mustang foal that was born on Easter who came to us as a foster. His mama was brought in from Fish Lake Valley last August and was in terrible shape - so much so that no one even knew she was in foal. Champ was born at the BLM and as soon as he was discovered was brought in to be nursed by hand because his mama had a uteran infection and could not produce the milk he needed to thrive.
We happened to be at the right place at the right time and agreed to foster Champ until he was healthy and weaned and able to find his forever home.
However, it turned out Champ had more issues than anyone was expecting.
He is a good, strong foal with a great desire to thrive and live. He is a good eater, and a happy, spry fellow...
But there are complications that are making Champs life difficult and have put him at great risk.
To start with, Champ came with wounds on both hocks that appear to have been some kind of trauma while he was out with the herd of horses his mama was with. They did not seem to be a big deal to start, but three vet visits later we are heartbroken to say the wounds are not healing as they should be and our vet believes that there are bone fragment debris beneath the surface that will need to be removed in order to have the wounds heal up the way they should. Mupltiple x-rays have been done and multiple vets have been consulted - we are waiting for a final say-so from the surgeon to figure out what hospital Champ will be going to and how best to treat his hocks. And what surgery will be required.
We have scheduled a specialist from San Luis Rey to come and ultrasound his belly and find out why he has trouble urinating and why his umbilical cord has not completely dried up. And why he has constant trouble with constipation.
Blood work has been run and came back promisngly good - no raging infections; nothing alarming or life threatening - which gives us hope that his troubles can still be cured.
This young colt has a huge zest for life - he is happy and talkative and absolutely adores people. He wants to live.
We constantly take in animals to foster and rehome, or simply to help through a tough period - but Champs expenses have reached an extent that we are not able to handle on our own. We love doing what we do here at Dusty Jeans Ranch, and would like to continue helping animals in need - especially the wild mustangs we have so come to love.
If you are in a position to help financially so that we can get Champ on the right track, we (and he) would be ever so grateful. I have set our goal low to start - a goal that would not cover surgery but would partially cover his hospital stay should nothing bad come up with his bladder and intestines, and only his hock wounds need to be addressed. We are hoping beyond hope that that is all this sweet boy will need!
If you would please share his story with your friends and family, we would be so appreciative.
Good thoughst and prayers for Champ!
