AAMI Cultural Exchange- Harlem to Haiti

In 2007, the Children's Aid Society launched the African American Male Initiative "“ Steps to Success program (AAMI) as a response to the disproportionate rates at which Black males are represented in negative outcomes associated with education, health, and the criminal justice system. This program provides participants with life coaching (an innovate approach to mentoring and service coordination), cultural enrichment opportunities, and academic support, while fostering college-going culture. AAMI started its work with sixty 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders who are currently 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. After nearly 7 years, AAMI participants boast nearly 300 grade promotions against 2 retentions, improvements in school attendance, and academic performance which outpaces their counterparts.
Many young people see the world as the 6-8 block radius surrounding their home, their school and other institutions critical to community life. The Harlem to Haiti Cultural Exchange Experience is critical to helping young people see the world "“ its politics, economy, and history "“ as increasingly interconnected. Please help us secure the resources to provide Harlem to Haiti scholarships to 12 program participants.
On January 12th, 2010 Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that displaced millions and killed hundreds of thousands. Over 3 years later, Haiti continues to struggle in the earthquake's aftermath. Students participating in this experience will help rebuild homes in the Delmas community of Port au Prince, visit various cultural sites, meet residents of the local community, and learn about the Haitian Revolution.
The total cost - including; round-trip airfare, ground transportation, lodging, food and materials - for our goal of 12 scholarships is $21,500.
