Kamryn is a 7-year old spunky, strong willed little girl. She complained to her parents of stomach pains a few times. After one night of really complaining her mother took her into the doctors and they told her it was a stomach virus and she needed to let it takes it course. She went on playing and arguing with her little 5-year old sister, like any 7 year old would do. On Friday of spring break, she went to her aunts house to have an Easter egg hunt with all of her cousins. She ate pizza, candy, found eggs but also complained a few times that her stomach hurt. Later that night, she was very uncomfortable and couldn't lie down without pain. Her parents asked where it hurt, and they pressed on the spot and knew right away that something wasn't right. They took her to the ER and they found a very large tumor attached to her kidney. Surgery was scheduled for a few days later to remove the kidney and the tumor, and chemotherapy would start soon after. During surgery, they discovered that the tumor had ruptured spilling into her stomach cavity. The tumor was also so large that it had attached to part of her colon and small intestine. The biopsy showed that the cancer is in an advanced stage and is a Wilm Tumor, which is a rare childhood cancer of the kidney (only 500 diagnosed a year). The surgery was stopped and it was determined that chemotherapy was needed first to shrink the tumor. After 6 weeks of Chemotherapy, Kamryn will go to NYC to have the second surgery. They will reopen her 10-inch incision to remove the tumor and her kidney.  She will need to remain in the city for recovery and then a round of radiation (everyday). Kamryn will be able to come back home, and start her second round of chemotherapy.  The length of chemo will be determined after her second surgery. Kamryn and her parents will be staying in the city; however, their younger daughter will be here finishing up school, which means several trips back and forth are in their future. This terrifying ordeal has left her family with many decisions to make. We hope to lessen the financial stress, and allow them the time they need to be together as a family while they battle this horrific disease.
