Delaney, our daughter, has Neurofibromatosis Type 1. NF1 is a multi system genetic disorder. It is chronic, lifelong, non curable with the possibility future progression. It is characterized by cafe'-au-lait, skeletal dysplasias, and by the growth benign and malignant nervous system tumors, most notably benign neurofibromas. NF1 requires constant surveillance to monitor possible progression.including the Optic nerve in jury causing possible visual problems or even blindness. In fact , we have to go back to Cincinnati in October and December for further surgery.
In 2011, when Delaney was 8, through routine imaging, she was found to have three spinal nerve tumors in her neck. Two were compressing the main spinal cord in her neck. We were referred to Cincinnati Children's Hospital because there were no institutions in our area that could handle this complex problem. We made many trips. to Cincinnati for her evaluation. This included multiple imaging techniques as well as multiple consults with orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and genetisists. As a result, in January of 2011, Delaney underwent a 12 hour surgery in Cincinnati to remove these tumors. Delaney was in a full neck, chest, and back brace for 1 year.
As a result we have obviously incurred extremely high medical debt.
In 2014, our hardship worsened. Our house flooded and we have been in 4 rental houses over that time period. We have not been able to move back to our home because of the discrepancy in cost between what State Farm will cover and the cost of repair, and trying to keep up with the cost of Delaney's medical bills.
The problem has become emergent, as this week we received both an eviction notice from our landlord as well as a foreclosure notice on our own home.
My wife and I are self employed and each work well over 50 hours per week. We just can't keep up.
