50 for 50

Q: What do you call something that is not racist, ageist, sexist, shadist, disabilist, doesn't care about money or religion and is the most destructive thing that can happen to a person and their family?

A: CANCER and it is no joke.

You work, earn a nice amount of money, enjoy a glass of wine/pint of beer/G+T/Cola. You love watching TV, enjoy a stroll, listening to music. Days just flow, months roll into years. Great family times, great times with friends. Life is good.

Then you get a cold, have a cough. You may find a lump or bump. Notice that a mole looks angry, going to the bathroom more than usual. You may have nothing at all. IT does not care. Blood tests, scans, examinations later and the DR utters them words to you. You zone out, you cannot hear, you cannot see, your life is going a mile a minute in front of your eyes. You stare straight ahead, having taken nothing in. However, IT is happening. You are now on a path you never wanted to be on. Choice is not an option anymore. Life is dictated by IT and IT is cancer.

This is my fundraising title....50 for 50. In honour of my Aunty Weeze who on January 18th 2019 turns the big 50. For the past 3 years, choice has not been an option. She has not been able to do what she wants when she wants. 3 types of cancer, one the most aggressive of all, allergy to chemo but onward she fights for life. Never giving up and will not be defeated. Takes an awful lot of strength in body and mind.

Support- the key word in living with IT. Family and friends rally around and offer all they can to help and spur on, encourage. IT takes its toll on family and friends too, they are tired and scared as well. IT really does not care what destruction it causes or to whom.

Cancer is isolating. Isolates the fighter from life, isolates the supporters from life. IT sucks. Until cancer showed up, banged on your door and then kicked through it, you do not have a clue what devastation you are dealing with. And you feel alone, so alone.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE, NEVER ALONE. We need to talk, we need to open up, we need to be there for each other. Do not hide from cancer, we need to face up to cancer.

"50 for 50" is my way of saying that cancer is happening every day. It seems to be circling ever closer to us all, no longer is it 'such and such has cancer'- its immediate and close to us all. I only know how to run and I am not even that good but I will set off on January 19th 2019, with Steve cycling by my side and I will run my first ultra marathon. It is 50 miles for each year Weeze has graced this planet. I am asking for people to pledge money for a mile to be run in honour of someone fighting cancer, of someone that lost their battle to cancer, to someone supporting someone going through cancer. I would love to have a name for every one of the 50 miles. Any donation will be gratefully received.

Money that is donated will be split 50/50 going to 2 fantastic causes. The first is Cancer Council Western Australia. Please visit their website www.cancerwa.asn.au. They have been a rock for Weeze through all her battles with this horrid disease. The second charity is Macmillan Cancer Support www.macmillan.org.uk , who have been so supportive towards my Mum and family on this side of the world, supporting Weeze through her battle. Both charities have been contacted and are in full support of my campaign.

I want to raise awareness and ask people to check themselves and check each other. Cancer knows no bounds and it will strike who it wants when it wants, we have to get ahead of it. Running 50 miles will be a challenge physically but mentally it will be a full on war. If Weeze and my other friends with cancer have taught me anything on their journey it is that the mind is the key to everything. Keep that strong and you can defeat anything.

My message is this; to Weeze and my close friends that are fighting, to everyone fighting, to everyone fighting for their loved ones to fight; I am running for you. I am running to kick cancers arse, I am running so it is not taboo. I am running so we all talk about it. I am running to raise money to defeat cancer, to find the cure, to end this war.

Please pledge a donation and I will run the mile for you or your loved one. Please come and meet me on my run to support me running the 50 miles. Please spread the word of what I am doing and why, so that cancer does not win. So IT does not dictate the journey anymore, so IT is eradicated. If you are feeling energetic enough, I am also asking people to sign up and run some of the route with me, be it 1/2 a mile or more. Lets make this a team effort and show our love for everyone fighting just to see one more day!!!
