Elizabeth's Chariot

July 2015 Update:

Thanks to all of your support we have been able to purchase a used wheelchair accessible van for Elizabeth!  We can not begin to express how much it means to us to have this goal become a reality.  It is so amazing having a vehicle that can transport Elizabeth in her wheelchair to doctor appointments, therapies, school, and for family outings!  We would not have been able to purchase this used vehicle without everyone's help and contributions!  Thank you for making this possible!  We love and appreciate you all!

Please join me in raising funds to purchase my niece, Elizabeth, a van that is wheelchair accessible!

Elizabeth was diagnosed with a rare seizure disorder (infantile spasms) which has impaired her developmental and physical growth and aided in her medical fragility. Elizabeth has been g-tube feed since birth. She is wheelchair dependent, requires 24hr care, and received a tracheotomy in 2012, all in an effort to thrive and live amongst us like any other child.

It is an extreme challenge to get around, as they rely only on their 4 door 2002 sedan.  Elizabeth is now 6 years old, and it has been getting more difficult to transport her and her brothers.  In May 2014, Elizabeth visited RIC (Rehabilitation Institute Chicago) and was informed that her scoliosis has worsened from her last visit. Elizabeth was referred to a spine specialist at Shriners. In June 2014, she was casted for her new Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral-Orthosis (TLSO) brace. The doctors are still observing her spine, and we are hoping the new TLSO brace will keep it from curving more. In October 2014, Elizabeth's received her new wheelchair, which is unable to be broken down and placed into the trunk of their car.  This places a new set of extra demands/challenges on the family.  Elizabeth's new wheelchair makes reaching our goal of getting Elizabeth a new vehicle even more critical!  The sedan is frequently in need of repair and does not have A/C for the summer months, which is CRUCIAL for a chronic respiratory disease child. Elizabeth has to be carried around her home and into the car. It is a struggle to get Elizabeth in the backseat, while leaving room for her required medical equipment, brothers, and parents. Now, the simple act of transporting the entire family in one vehicle with her new wheelchair is no longer a possibility.

My sister's family is in desperate need for a reliable, wheelchair accessible van. They live on a very limited income and find it difficult to save enough money monthly for a newer car. A wheelchair accessible van can be expensive, as it needs to be modified to fit Elizabeth's needs. My sister and her significant other are such loving parents, and they work so hard to provide for Elizabeth and her brothers. They never ask for anything, and they never complain about their hardships. Despite the daily parenting hardships and disruptions due to not having enough time, money, or energy, they still ensure the family needs are met. They truly are amazing, and they really deserve the luxury of having a dependable vehicle to get their entire family where they need to go.

They need a new or reliable, used wheelchair accessible van to transport Elizabeth in her wheelchair to doctor appointments, therapies, school, and for family outings. A few dollars would go a long way towards helping them out - either by raising enough to buy a wheelchair accessible van or by raising enough for a large down payment to make car payments reasonable for their income.

Through this fundraiser, I want to not only get the van my niece needs, but one that will allow her and her family to arrive to their destination safely and comfortably. Please help Elizabeth and her family by making a donation (no matter how big or small). It can be a simple gesture of spreading this fundraiser on Facebook or forwarding through email to family, friends, and colleagues. Everyone knows somebody who has a story to tell, and we can certainly use your help in sharing our story and getting the word out! Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
