Music mentoring and instruction as an antidote to gang involvement and childhood trauma, targeting at-risk grade school kids

On April 27, 2012 a Chicago based poet/writer/NFP executive turned on the car radio just in time to hear a news story about five teens fallen in a drive-by shooting at the very site where he had just stood two-hours earlier. He felt remorse as he pondered the irony that this event happened in front of a sacred place named Our Lady Of Peace. Fortunately the victims survived, nevertheless, he felt the need to proactively do something positive towards non-violence. Months later he met a professional composer/musician who had twice lost family members to violence. With high school classmates in gangs had personally avoided the allure of involvement by becoming a musician (which they admired and respected). A fellow music colleague also shared his story about how, during his high school years, an active gang member had literally begged him for referrals for work with local bands. As a burgeoning drummer, this gang lieutenant had desperately sought a pathway to the promise of a new life in music. Unfortunately this didn't happen fast enough and he is now incarcerated for life.

The three artists mentioned above each possessed a great passion to do something that would make a positive impact the lives of at-risk young people (especially those exposed to violence). They collectively agreed on the need for urban youth to have new options to create stories with happy endings. They explored ideas with other like-minded interdisciplinary artists, music educators and performing artists"” some with backgrounds in social work, psychology, nutrition, business and management. Those conversations evolved into a concept and subsequently, a plan for the launching of an artist-driven not-for-profit organization: MusicSaves 1-On-1. Utilizing known research, proven methodologies with a wealth of collective experience in diverse areas of the arts and business, the staff of MusicSaves 1-On-1 is committed to inspiring creative excellence, brilliant moments and golden opportunity for the next generation. We invite you to join us as a teacher, sponsor or donor in the creation of great new success stories.
